Go Bright for Sight (from home) on 24 July

July 2020

As hundreds of thousands of employees continue to work from home, Sightsavers Ireland is celebrating its hugely popular corporate fundraising campaign a little differently this year.

With COVID-19 having drastically changed Ireland’s working landscape, Sightsavers is asking people to brighten up their home ‘offices’ by donning some yellow for a great cause.

Now in its fourth successful year, Sightsavers’ Bright for Sight fundraiser asks people across Ireland to take part simply by wearing something yellow to work on 24 July. Ciara Smullen, Acting CEO at Sightsavers Ireland, says that virtual meetings, gatherings, and fundraisers have been embraced enthusiastically as a result of social distancing restrictions: “Whether you are working from an ironing board in your bedroom, in retail or have made it back to the office, get your colleagues and friends to join you in your new socially distanced workplace or virtually to make a massive difference to those living with visual impairment.

“Every year, donations from Bright for Sight fundraisers really do go such a long way in the developing countries where we work: just €2 provides a pair of glasses, €4 pays for a lens for a sight-saving cataract operation, and €104 can restore the sight of a child with cataracts.”

Paul Grimes, managing director of An Post Insurance, the title sponsors of Bright for Sight, said his firm is proud to support the event for the second year running. “An Post Insurance is delighted to support the Bright for Sight campaign this year. Wearing yellow on 24 July is a great way to brighten up any workplace, but we take great pride in knowing that it will mean the lives of so many people will be transformed through the gift of sight.”

The campaign ambassador is Dr Sinead Kane, a solicitor, mediator, ultra-runner, and two-time Guinness World Record holder. The Cork native, who is visually impaired, travels the world as a blind athlete, adventurer, and international keynote speaker on adversity. Sinead says that 2020 has certainly been a challenge so far but it should not stop people from taking part.

“COVID-19 has really changed how we think about and look at including people with disabilities. It has been challenging for everyone but particularly for those of us who have to access messaging and information in a different way. Like everyone else, I’ve had work and sporting events cancelled, but you just have to adapt and carry on,” she said.

“I think people living in Ireland have adapted well and really quickly; a lot of things have moved to virtual events and online. The current situation won’t stop people’s generosity and propensity to give to those who need it more. So, if you have anything yellow, wear it to work on 24 July and go Bright for Sight. You will be changing someone’s life forever.”
